Star Wars: Who's the Chosen one, Anakin or Luke?

This article here will cover a good bit from the latest Rebels episode "Twin Suns." Which if you haven't seen yet please do yourself a favor and do so immediately.

So again this is your final warning.
SPOILERS if you are not caught up on the T.V. show Star Wars Rebels.

Season 3 of Rebels has been building up to two major events in Star Wars lore. First being the final showdown between rivals, Obi-Wan Kenobi and Maul. The second being the battle of Lothal. The episode "Twin Suns" gave us the first of these events when Maul used Ezra to find Master Kenobi on the desert planet of Tatooine.

Prior to the two facing off, Ezra and Kenobi have an interesting conversation about the Force and what Ezra and the Rebellion need. During this conversation Ezra is adamant about the Holocrones being what led him to them meeting and  that the Holocrones only tell the truth.

Assuring Ezra that it was Maul who actually led Ezra there by twisting his perception, Kenobi says a line that has MUCH more meaning later in the episode than it did at this point in time.

"The truth is often what we make of it..."

It is immediately after he tells Ezra this that Maul arrives and Kenobi rushes Ezra off. The Showdown has begun.

Both Maul and Kenobi face each...
Maul: Look what has become of you. A rat in the desert.
Ben Kenobi: Look at what I've risen above.
Maul: I've come to kill you, but perhaps it's worse to leave you here, festering in your squalor.
Ben Kenobi: If you define yourself by your power to take life, the desire to dominate, to possess? Then you have nothing.
Maul: [igniting his lightsaber] And what do you have? Why come to this place, not simply to hide?... Oh, you have a purpose here. Perhaps you are "protecting" something? No... protecting *Someone*
It's when Maul says those words that Kenobi finally ignites his lightsaber and prepares to battle. He must do everything he can to make sure the one he is protecting stays protected.

Maul quickly lunges at Kenobi make a few moves before being sliced down his chest by Obi-Wan then falling into his arms. And it is these next few lines of dialogue that shocked and confused many.
Maul: [Dying] Tell me... is it the chosen one?
Ben Kenobi: He is.
Maul: He will... avenge us.
It's immediately obvious that Maul is questioning if the one Kenobi is protecting is "the chosen one." The fact that Obi-Wan quickly responds with a yes may have been confusing to some, but below I will explain.

But I thought Anakin was the chosen one?

He is...But at this point in time is it hard to believe that the truth which Kenobi believes to be true is simply what he made it to be?

He believes completely that Anakin Skywalker died that day on Mustafar and became Darth Vader. According to the prophecy "The Chosen One" is the Jedi who would destroy the Sith and bring balance to the Force once and for all.

In Kenobi's eyes Anakin failed at this and to him, and most likely Master Yoda, their Hope relied on a young boy from Tatooine, Luke Skywalker.

Now as fans of the franchise, we all know that Anakin is eventually the one who destroys the Sith when he opts to save his son from Emperor Palpatine at the end of Return of the Jedi. But again, it is in this moment during this time period that none of these characters are aware of what is to come.

So, in Kenobi's eyes, Luke, being the last possible Jedi MUST be the chosen one the prophecy spoke of.

Again, I will reiterate, Anakin is still and will always be "The Chosen One" that destroyed the Sith. We just need to look at the current events and what Kenobi is going through at that time.

A side note: If you are wondering why Maul then speaks of being avenged. It's because of the way he was betrayed by his former Master, Darth Sidious. Maul, in the past, tried to take on Sidious but failed, so it is no surprise he would hold out hope that the chosen one would succeed where he failed.
