Power Rangers Non-Spoiler Reveiw

Being at the ripe age of 7 when Power Rangers debuted in the 1993, I was without a doubt looking forward to this film in hopes that it would bring back some of that nostalgia from when I was a child and things were simpler.

The movie starts off with an interesting twist on the Power Ranger lore which may very well be the most welcome and exciting surprise of the film and one that really gives the dynamic between villain Rita Repulsa and Power Ranger's mentor Zordon much more depth.

Elizabeth Banks as Rita Repulsa
Speaking of Rita Repulsa, Elizabeth Banks absolutely KILLS it. While she chews up the scenery quite a bit, it without a doubt made her character all that much more enjoyable to watch, despite the campy nature at times.

And honestly what do you expect from a movie about Power Rangers? The campiness, when it happens, is a nice break from the serious tone this film occasionally has.

This brings me to the actors and actresses who portray the Rangers and let me tell you they rocked it. Dacre Montgomery, who plays Jason the Red Ranger, was my favorite of the cast. He sold his story arc and truly made you feel like he was the leader of this group.

The Others, Naomi Scott (Kimberly the Pink Ranger), RJ Cyler (Billy the Blue Ranger), Becky G (Trini the Yellow Ranger) and Ludi Lin (Zack the Black Ranger) all portray their characters well, however RJ has a little more to do with everything compared to the others.

Now for some of the disappointing aspects. After the very interesting beginning the film slows pretty quickly. Obviously this is due to the need of introducing us to the characters, but even then Zack and Trini are sort of after thoughts when it comes to the introductions. However, this is easy to look past knowing there will be at least one sequel where these characters will most likely be developed a bit more.

Another gripe is the size of Angel Grove, It reminded me a lot
of the town from the first Thor movie, and how the danger for those within the town seemed a bit insignificant. However the overall McGuffin of the film isn't just focused on the destruction of Angel Grove, I still felt like they should have made it a bigger city than a small town in the middle of no-where.

Finally, my biggest issue with the movie was the character designs of the putties and Rita's monster Goldar. The Putties just looked bad, unpleasing and not threatening at all. Goldar was literally molten Gold with no face, reminded me a bit of Enchantress' brother from Suicide Squad. Which in my opinion was a big flaw of that film.

Now, without a doubt I recommend this film for all of those who were once fans of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. And even if you weren't I know my brother, who never watched a single episode, really enjoyed the film.

So go check it out, don't expect a deep film, but enjoy the campiness and action that only a film about Power Rangers can bring.

GO, GO!
